Be the change you want to see – MK Gandhi October 2, 2009

A tribute to the Mahatma may not always be on lavishing infinite praise on him or drawing parallels in history that relegate him to levels of surreality and even, disbelief.

I have come across many who scorn @ Bapu –  staunch believers of an incredible loss, deceit and conspiracy that scripted our country’s birth and plague it even today. I have spent many a lunches, dinners and uncomfortable walks debating their line of thought, without much success. Their conviction is as strong as my belief and it’s hard to find a winner.

But now I debate no more. Because its not as important as to believe in the goodness of Bapu as it is to believe in the veracity of things he stood for. As long as we continue to build a world on non violence, truth, love and human dignity, there can be no greater tribute, no truer talisman.

So give this a thought -

  • close to 80% of the world today lives in countries that are ‘third world’
  • death due to poverty and hunger every year is many a times more than accidents, terrorism, catastrophes, world wars and all of them put together
  • diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and small pox have been eradicated from the developed world but continue to rampantly kill in Asia and Africa
  • over 100 billion pounds of food is wasted in America alone every year. This would be sufficient to feed close to 700 million hungry people across the world
  • the top 10 corporate tax payers in India paid close to Rs 35000 crores in 2007-08. It takes a person to earn Rs 25000 per year to be above the poverty line. Put this together, the taxes from the top 10 corporates could have brought 1.4 cr Indian families above the poverty line.

Every where we look, there is so much that needs to be done. So much of change we all wish to see. But will we ever move a muscle to create a change? When will we shun our arm chairs, look beyond ourselves and bring about a change? What have we done to make this world a better place?

Put starkly,  do we have the balls ‘to be the change we wish to see

One man did. He needs no intro and no ode.

The irony of my time November 1, 2008

In pursuit of peace,

Wars I wage.

Its the irony of my times,

I seek a better world by taking lives.

I search for love but I can trust no more.

I build roads to get closer.

Then I make walls to keep me safer.

I only mean well but how do I know…

On yonder side, is it love thats sown or rage thats grown?

Every day I live a lie.

Of finding a better world before I die.

When have knives weeded out hatred,

Or bullets built trust?

I am searching for a world I killed.

And why am I still gunning my neighbour for it?

Of life, dreams, frustration. And Fermat’s last theorem October 27, 2008

Well.. its all a maze of time. Living it every day makes it more confusing. I keep walking, thinking I know the way or else, I’ll make my way. Somedays, I seem to win. But most days, I seem so lost…

Seems like there is something we know about ourselves. Somedays it feels like a strong intuition. And some other days, nothing more than a stupid self belief. Without reason, without evidence, why do we believe in ourself? What makes us think we can make it, when we don’t even know the road ahead…

Life in itself is a flurry or images and emotions captured in time. But there must be a reason to this motion picture we live everyday. Or atleast, should we not be finding a reason to live? A life of purpose… A purposeful life.

Thinking of life, makes us dream. Dream of all that we wish to create. Through these dreams, we tend to see our purpose. Our raison d’etre.

Dreams lead us to expectations. And expectations are almost always met with failures. Most times, repeated failures.

Failures build frustration and we question ourselves. The same very questions we started out with: The purpose, The reason, The maze and the road ahead.

Let life roll. Let dreams fail. Let failures grow and frustration build.

And even there is that voice that says – Keep walking… And we live to walk an other day in the maze of time.

There seems scant reason for self belief. Little chances of success.

After all Fermat’s last theorem took three centuries to be proven. But it was true ever since it was written.

Think of knowing something that is true but not knowing how to prove it. Sometimes that’s what this journey of life looks like.

Time will bring along a proof, an evidence. Hopefully it wont take three centuries to finally justify our life. Hopefully it might just take a lifetime.

Some statements need not be explained.

They are thumb rules written in stone. They will stand there and stare into your face.

You can choose not to see them or respond to them. But you cannot ignore them.

And this is one such rule – Mediocrity will take you down.

Struggle and strive. You’ll fail or succeed.

Don’t just walk through life. As if you have no drive or pride.

Mediocrity is a crime…

Searching for self… May 1, 2008

Floating clouds in a vast sky…
Are they seeking the land beyond these skies?
The flame glows so bright…
Did it find the cosmos the air beheld?
The river flows unstopped
What keeps it alive, The ocean or the journey to it?

Man, matter, mind…
What is it that we all keep searching?
The cloud, the birds, the river and me
There is something we are seeking.
Unseen, unknown, myth or hope,
It’s this pursuit I live everyday.
In this pursuit of life,
Somewhere, will lie the discovery of self.
And, with that, the end of a lifetime of search…

A lifetime I spent not realising
All the while, what I was searching was me.
And then, will I depart.
Without having found myself…

Humility beckons, Irony stares…
Life is but a pursuit of identity.
The cloud, the birds, the river and me
Who are we in time, space and destiny?

Life goes on.. with or without people..

At the end what remains is just us and the memories of people who came and left…

At the end what remains is, always a ‘journey of self’.

Discover your Destiny January 2, 2008

Yes, there is a destiny that awaits us all. The irony is that we are not destined for it.

We need to make a choice.

Either,

We can decide to walk through our lives, never realise what are we looking for and why, weather with seasons and finally stop with time. This is a good life, mind you. We would have lived, we would have died, though with little consequence whatsoever. And then, when it all ends, we would call it fate. But, my friend, is it not a self chosen one?

Or,

We can choose to look for reason – reason in everything we want to do. This reason is our destiny. We can decide to run, fall, fail and maybe, maybe succeed in discovering our destiny.

Most of us will never dare to look inside for this reason. Of the some who will, many of us will get lost and perish in pursuit. Of the very few who will last, what are our chances?

It is always our choice -

To resign to fate

or To discover our destiny…

Of festivities and rationality November 8, 2007

Man is not a rational animal ; he is a rationalising one.

November. Delhi. Fog, Chill and in these settings of dull evenings, you would see a city being dressed in festive lights as the sun sets by. They glow, they glitter in colours of pink, yellow and blue. They bring a city together in joy and celebration. Diwali is here, the festival of lights. What joy! But wonder why we need to wait till every November to celebrate together?

Festivals are actually an amazing example of rationalization.

Festivals in themselves seem to usher in a mood of happiness and joy. But wonder why?

Why is it that we need an excuse of a Diwali to forget our worries and celebrate? Is it social proofing at work because we know everyone is celebrating. And hence, celebrating with them wont be too bad.

And how does commercial activity (aka shopping) jump up in one season? We buy because everyone buys – again social proofing? No, it is not really because of ‘discounts’. Discounts are given by stores because they want us to buy more once we are in there. Yea.. the brands/stores are smart. They are rational and this rationality in a festive season helps them meet their sales targets.

Ever wondered how a big 60 font written in red ‘SALE‘ makes us irrational? How many times have we gone into a ‘SALE’ at our favourite store and come out buying nothing? How many times have we gone into a ‘SALE’ at our favourite store and come out buying something even though we really did not want/like the item we purchased.

Most of us anchor ourselves to the word ‘SALE’ and hence start believing that what we are getting is a good deal – Anchoring, Satisficing, Rationalisation.

And around us we see people buying a lot. So if it makes sense to them, it must make sense to me. Social Proofing.

And the retailer greets you with a big big smile. Wonder why? He’s selling it @ 50 % discount ! You got the better deal , then why is he so happy?

Read between the lines sweetheart - Our irrationality makes many a businesses run – and dont they love us for it !

But apart from all this, all said and done, festivals indeed are necessary.

Because however forced upon it actualy maybe, but festivals do bring in a a season of joy.

They give people a reason to forget grudges and worries and celebrate.

Between rational behaviour leading to gloom and glum and irrational behaviour leading to joy and celebration, I guess the latter is better.

Happy irrationality.

Happy Diwali !

Keep Running… July 11, 2007

As our startup struggle gains momentum with new uncertainities and unseen opportunities, here are a couple of lines that came to mind while driving back from delhi yesterday.

Keep Running.

Run hard. Never meant running fast.

Run easy. Never meant running slow.

To Run smart. Thats what we need to know.

When you find others runing ahead of you, run faster.

When you find others running behind you, run fastest.

This is a marathon.

To win, you need to last.

At times slow, at times fast.

But at all times, run smart…

Keep running.

Do not stand at my grave and weep June 20, 2007

Thought provoking poem by Mary Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
